‘I’m passionate about cultivating inclusive community spaces. Alongside my role as a researcher in our Episodic Memory Group, I’m a creative director, performer and event organiser who develops networks that connect queer people of colour.

I was born and raised in North West London, and decided to move somewhere where I could authentically be myself. I chose Sussex because Brighton has a vibrant energy – it attracts a lot of open-minded, creative, kind people with important perspectives.

As a proud first-generation Iranian immigrant, I witnessed many struggles growing up, which motivated me to learn how our minds work and how we connect with others. I achieved a first-class honours degree in Psychology with British Sign Language and then completed an MSc while working at a psychiatric hospital specialising in child and adolescent mental health. This made me realise my passion lies in driving systemic change and amplifying the voices of others.

Sussex enabled me to meet fellow queer people who’ve helped me to thrive in my identity. I joined the Drag Society as a first-year, and I’m now an established drag king who gigs across the UK. It’s all because I had opportunities to connect with like-minded people who’ve added so much value to my life, and empowered me to drive societal change.

Alongside my academic work, I now run my own events, including community nights for LGBTQ+ and global majority groups, underpinned by the values of love, joy and creativity.

There are amazing groups and spaces in Brighton that have supported my journey, like the Actors theatre and Radical Rhizomes, which offers accessible opportunities ranging from workshops to theatre shows. Engaging with resources like these can help you to find your people and build your own communities, so don’t be afraid to reach out.

I’ve met amazing people in Brighton, and we’re proud to continue the revolutionary forms of self-expression that came before us. It feels like we’re living in the future and society hasn’t quite caught up yet, but I have big dreams. Together, we can create a better, more inclusive world.’
